Costume Shop’s Summer of Opera Showcases Student Talent

In All, Music, Theatre by Andrew Golden

Each year, faculty member, Jason Estala runs a summer stock opera costume shop, during which a number of different costumes are crafted for a number of different shows. This past summer, Estala enlisted the help of students, Kelsea Andrade (’16) and Amanda Miller (’16), as interns on the project. Together, the trio worked to create costumes as well as run backstage for the Brevard Music Center (BCM).

The stitching experience I gained over the summer was vast, and gave me beautiful, full pieces that I can put in my professional portfolio.Amanda Miller, TFDP Student '16
BCM is a summer music institution in the mountains of North Carolina. It is the home of the Janiec Opera Company that hosts 30 opera singers from around the world. In eight weeks the BMC produces 3 full operas and one new work opera. Over the course of the summer, the BMC costume shop produces hundred of costumes in several different time periods, from Elizabethan to Victorian, to fit opera singers of all sizes.

As both an Intern Stitcher and Wardrobe Supervisor for the shop, TFDP student Kelsea Andrade spoke to how the program broadened her experience in costuming: “It was interesting to experience working in opera, which is a different environment from musicals or other plays. I am very thankful to Jason for giving me the opportunity.”

I could not be more proud of Amanda and Kelsea for all of their hard work this summer. They were a wonderful representation of UCR and our department.Jason Estalla, Lecturer/Costume Manager
Fellow student and Intern Stitcher, Amanda Miller said of the experience, “The stitching experience I gained over the summer was vast, and gave me beautiful full pieces that I can put in my professional portfolio.”

The four shows BCM staged this summer were:
Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi
Così fan Tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The Ballad of Baby Doe by Douglas Moore
Falling Angel (New Work) By J. Mark Scearce

On working with two student interns, costume manager and TFDP staff member Jason Estala said, “They did an amazing job and produced some absolutely beautiful costumes on top of running the show backstage. I could not be more proud of Amanda and Kelsea for all of their hard work this summer. They were a wonderful representation of UCR and our department.”
